Track and field athletes are known as runners, jumpers and throwers. It was the strength of the throwers that propelled the Fremont boys track and field team to victory on April 8.
Fremont's trio of Matt Barkley, Ruben Chagoya and Patrick Van Zant swept the three scoring places in the shot put and discus, powering the Firebirds to a 67-60 win over Cupertino in a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division meet at Cupertino.
Meanwhile, Kimberly Culclager won three girls events and Kelly Bushnell took the weight events, but the Firebirds were on the short end of the team score, 80-47.
Barkley's heave of 53-6 easily was the class of the shot competition. Chagoya and Van Zant tied for second with best efforts of 39-5. Chagoya hurled the discus 126-10 for first place in that event. Barkley's mark of 122-0 was second. Van Zant (39-5) was third.
Jay Atkins and William Stallings were double winners for the Firebirds. Atkins won the 400 meters in 53.94, finishing just ahead of teammate James Scott (54.6), and he took the long jump at 19-7. Stallings won the 100 high hurdles, then later took the 300 lows in 45.56.
Atkins also ran 23.75 for second place in the 200 meters and scaled 5-6 for third in the high jump.
Fremont runners placed one-two in the 1,600 and 3,200. Kevin Schneider won the four-lap race in 4:54.1, and Kevin Shi captured the eight-lapper in 10:48.
Elijah Carrillo was a workhorse for the Firebirds, taking second in both distance events. He ran 4:58.4 in the 1,600 and 11:05 in the 3,200. Carrillo also finished third in the 800 in 2:16.
Chris Otto placed second in the 100 in 11.47, just .03 behind Cupertino's Ryan Vicente. Scott was third in the triple jump with 36-9.
In the girls' competition, Culclager won the short sprints by long margins. She zipped through the 100 in 12.78, finishing nearly a full second ahead of the runner-up. She ran 27.59 in the 200, more than a second better than the field. Teammate Brittney Lilje placed third in both sprints.
Culclager's third victory was in the high jump, where she cleared 4-6.
Bushnell led a Fremont sweep in the girls discus event with a toss of 116-3. Jona Urenda was second at 77-6 and Jerusha Zachariah placed third at 68-0.
In the shot put, Bushnell won with an effort of 31-0. Zachariah was third at 24-3.
Other second-place finishes for the Firebirds were recorded by Keiva Pinkney (13-8) in the long jump and Jacqueline Edwards (68.44) in the 400. Third-placers were Melody Su in the 300 hurdles, Bina Patel in the 3,200 and Nikki Kinney in the 1,600.
Bushnell and Barkley both were impressive in winning events at the 21st annual St. Francis Track and Field Carnival on April 3.
Bushnell captured the girls discus with a personal best 120-9. Barkley, a senior, muscled the shot put 56-01. Bushnell also placed sixth in the girls shot put with an effort of 33-3.
