Wen wins for Fremont against Vikings
By Mike Barnhart
The Lynbrook boys swimming team has quality and quantity. But does Fremont freshman Larry Wen give a splash? Nope!

Wen easily won two events and swam the lead on the Firebirds' winning 200-meter freestyle relay team on April 2 at the Lynbrook pool in a meet won by the Vikings 109-59.

The Fremont ninth-grader captured the 200 individual medley in 2:02.82, nearly five seconds better than second-place Andrew Wu of Lynbrook.

Later, in the 500 free, Wen's winning time of 5:00.34 outdistanced the challengers by more than a minute. The second-place time was 5:00.34.

In the 200 free relay, Wen teamed with senior Stephen Shimshock, sophomore Patrick Samuels and senior Gordon Cameron for a winning time of 1:42.13.

Other Firebirds winning races were Cameron and senior Tony Zhu. Cameron won the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.85 and Zhu took the 100 butterfly in 57.97.

Zhu was second in the 100 backstroke. Viking Brandt Robinson swam 58.07 to edge Zhu by just .26 of a second. Senior Andrew Amm placed second in the 100 free with 55.54 and Cameron took second in the 50 free with 24.39.

Shimshock's effort of 2:08.19 in the 200 free earned a third place.

Lynbrook's girls team, a 116-44 winner, captured first place in all of the events, but the Firebirds had some strong second-place efforts.

Lauren Carter (200 free), Angela Cascone (200 IM), Aly Meyer (100 butterfly) and Laine Armour (100 breast) all picked up seconds.

Cascone was third in the 100 back and Kirby Conrad took third in the 500 free.

Fremont resumes Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division competition on April 16 at Santa Clara.

Mustangs second

After winning three straight games in the Cupertino Lions Baseball Tournament, Homestead finally was slowed down by the pitching of Mitty's Martin Wan.

The Mustangs had posted wins over Prospect, Hillsdale of San Mateo and Lynbrook to reach the championship game, but Wan fired a 3-hitter and the Monarchs won 10-0.

After a first-round win at PAL Stadium against Prospect on April 3, Homestead edged Hillsdale 7-6 in eight innings and survived a late rally while beating Lynbrook 6-4.

Craig Moberg's second hit of the game drove in the decisive run against Hillsdale with two out in the last of the eighth. Sophomore Kyle Dukes was the winning pitcher.

Moberg had two more hits against Lynbrook, including a double. Homestead's four-run fifth inning proved to be the difference against the Vikings, who had previously beaten the Mustangs in two of three games.

Jeff Hungerford was the winning pitcher for the Mustangs, who finished the tournament with an overall record of 10-6.

Cathcart leads Fremont

Fremont won its second game of the season on April 9, and Nathan Cathcart had a lot to do with it.

The 5-foot-10 sophomore doubled, tripled and drove in two runs as the Firebirds scored a 6-5 home triumph over SCVAL De Anza Division rival Cupertino.

The victory avenged the Firebirds' 3-2 loss at Cupertino a week earlier and improved their division record to 2-7.

Cathcart was the winning pitcher, but needed relief help from Dan Bergeron. After Fremont scored five runs in the last of the fifth inning to go ahead 6-1, the Pioneers rallied for two in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
