Volunteers can pick fruit, donate cans
Money to help the homeless may not grow on trees, but other necessary items to help the homeless do.
Every three or four months, the Foundation for a Global Community organizes a fruit-collection project to gather extra fruit from local trees and donate them to the Second Harvest Food Bank.
The next drive is set for April 25, and volunteers are needed to donate or pick excess oranges, grapefruits, lemons or other citrus fruits. In the past, volunteers have been able to collect more than a ton of fruit each time. People who donate fruit from their own trees will receive a tax-deduction form in return.
To volunteer your fruit for collection, or to be a picker, call Joni Diserens of the Village Harvest Group at 650.740.7725. All volunteers will meet at the Foundation for a Global Community, 222 High St., Palo Alto, at 12:30 p.m.
Garage sale helps promote recycling
One Sunnyvale man's junk has a chance of becoming another man's treasure, during Sunnyvale's citywide garage sale.
On April 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.--although some hours may vary--treasure-hunting season opens as houses across Sunnyvale display their old items as part of the "Freedom to Choose and Reuse" program.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to get outside and wander throughout the garage sales on that day, to help Sunnyvale recycle old goods that would otherwise be thrown away.
For more information, how-to kits or recycling ideas, visit www.sunnyvale.ca.gov.
