The qualifying journey to the Central Coast Section track and field championship meet begins for Santa Clara Valley Athletic League boys and girls at two venues this week, after some Homestead athletes closed out the dual meet season in a flourish.
Homestead and Fremont will compete against Cupertino, in the El Camino Division finals on May 5 at Santa Clara High. Other participating schools will be Saratoga, Cupertino, Monta Vista, Mountain View and Santa Clara.
The De Anza Division finals are set for May 8 at Los Altos.
Individual competitions will be held in four categories, varsity and frosh-soph for boys and varsity and junior varsity for girls. The best 16 marks in each event from the two meets will advance to the SCVAL qualifier at Los Gatos High on May 15.
From the qualifying meet, the top six from each boys event and the best five from each girls event will move on to the CCS semifinals on May 22 at San Jose City College. The CCS finals also will be at San Jose City on May 28.
In Homestead's final dual meet, the boys lost to Monta Vista 77-47 and the girls fell 82-45.
Homestead junior Alton Sumpter ran a blazing 10.9 seconds in the 100-meter dash during an April 29 dual meet against Monta Vista. Sumpter, who attended Live Oak of Morgan Hill last year, is the nephew of Homestead coach Eddie Sumpter, Sr. He is the first SCVAL runner--and just the third sprinter in the CCS--to break 11.0 this season.
Dieadra Pettigrew won the girls 100 in a league-best time of 12.66. Her mark ranks seventh in the CCS. The Mustangs' 400 relay team of Osia Bose, Allie Garnett, Siddiqui and Pettigrew combined to win in 52.05, the unit's best mark of the season.
Jumper Christina Fukumoto and thrower Sandra Kiel were double winners.
Fukumoto triple-jumped 35-4 and sailed 16-4 in the long jump. The triple jump ranks second in the section and league only to Milpitas freshman Eileen Nguyen's best of 35-5.
Kiel's winning marks were a personal season-best 94-0 in the discus and 33-11 in the shot. Siddiqui won the 400 in 1:04.8.
On the boys' side, junior William Tsai won both weight events for the Mustangs, hurling the discus 146-2 and heaving the shot 43-5.
Sumpter teamed with Robert Scott, Kuang Pham and Domingo Emiano to win the 400 relay in 43.9. Jason Anthony, who sprinted 53.33 to win the 400, ran the anchor leg for the victorious 1,600 relay unit. Scott, Sumpter and Derek Okamura ran the first three legs.
