After watching his Fremont High tennis team get "spanked" in most of its matches this season, coach Richard Newman thoroughly enjoyed watching the league's post-season doubles tournament.
"I have never been happier while coaching high school tennis," Newman enthused after Fremont seniors Senthil Chidambaran and Dan Duong plowed through their competition to capture the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division doubles crown.
"They make a very strong team," Newman explained after the Fremont tandem took out the Cupertino pair of Anukul Schenoy and Jayanth Parupalli, 6-4, 6-3, for the championship. "Each has a strong will to win and is very competitive."
In the decisive set, after getting ahead 4-3, the two Firebirds ran off eight of the next 10 points to close out the match.
To reach the title match Chidambaran and Duong followed a first-round bye with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kishore Atreya and Shaoyi Zhang of Cupertino. In the semifinals, they beat a Wilcox team 6-1, 6-2.
The Central Coast Section playoffs are set for May 2527 at Imperial Courts in Aptos.
"I think they have a chance to do well," Newman said.
