Silva, Van Orden in all-star football game
By Dick Sparrer
The Almaden Valley Rotary club approached Jim Guido of the San Jose Police Activities League with an idea for a summer all-star football game for recently graduated high school seniors.

The two organizations got together to make it happen, and on Aug. 8, 1974, the finest high school football players from the '74 graduating class got together for the first game of its kind, played that summer at San Jose State University's Spartan Stadium.

Well, it was a good idea then, and it's still a good idea today. There's no longer an affiliation with PAL, and it's not longer played at San José State, but the Rotary Club—which now includes Guido in its membership—still sponsors the game and will present the 30th annual Silicon Valley Youth Classic Charlie Wedemeyer High School All-Star Football Game.

The all-star game with the long name will return to the popular San José City College field on July 21, 7:30 p.m.

The game, called the "Best Game in Town," has featured such National Football League stars as Jeff Garcia of the Cleveland Browns, Doug Cosbie of the Dallas Cowboys, Jeff Toews of the Miami Dolphins, John Tuggle and Erik Howard of the New York Giants, the late Pat Tillman of the Arizona Cardinals and more.

Local stars set to play in this year's edition of the all-star classic include quarterback Mike Silva of Fremont and offensive lineman Mike Van Orden of Homestead.

Former local stars who have participated in the summer classic include:
