At the first city council meeting with interim City Attorney Joan Borger, Mayor John Howe established an ad hoc committee to begin the search for a permanent replacement for former City Attorney Valerie Armento.
Armento—although she is on the city payroll until Sept. 30, 2005—left office on Oct. 15, after settling a contract dispute with the city council.
Howe placed himself on the committee along with Councilmen Ron Swegles and Otto Lee. He said he chose these three committee members because Melinda Hamilton is still on maternity leave and Fred Fowler and Julia Miller are leaving office in a year. Dean Chu—who many believe will follow Howe as mayor—would not have time to serve on the committee if he is promoted next month.
Howe said their first meeting, by conference call, was scheduled for Oct. 22. He says he doesn't know how long the search will take but anticipates that the process will go into next year.
