Melinda Hamilton may be avoiding council meetings that run into the wee hours of the morning during her three-month leave from her duties as councilwoman, but that doesn't mean she's getting all the sleep she needs.
Instead of concerned citizens and city issues demanding her attention, she is focusing all her time on her newborn son, Tobias Nils Hirsch.
"Yeah, Mom and Dad are operating on major sleep deprivation these days," Hamilton said during a brief break while Tobias slept. "People always say that parenting is on-the-job training, and they're definitely right about that."
Tobias—6 pounds 9 ounces at birth—was born to Hamilton and her husband, Olaf Hirsch, on Oct. 15 in El Camino Hospital, the same place his mother was born.
Hamilton—who has been in office for just under a year—is almost halfway through the three-month leave she took from the council, but says that she plans to attend the Nov. 16 meeting to elect a new mayor. She said she also plans to attend some of the private council meetings regarding hiring a new police chief and library director.
But in the meantime, Hamilton said she is perfectly content at home with her family's new addition.
"We're having a great time," she said. "We're learning about him, and he's learning about us."
