Fremont Kim third at CCS golf finals
By Mike Barnhart
Naomi Kim, a Fremont senior, finished in a tie for third place at the Central Coast Section golf tournament on Nov. 2.

Kim's score of 74 at Carmel's Rancho Canada Golf Club was three shots off the pace set by winner Joanne Lee of Belmont's Carlmont. Corinna Rees of Pacific Grove shot 72 for second place. Lindsay Shean of Salinas joined Kim in third place.

Kim was one of four individuals and three teams that represented the CCS on Nov. 8 in the California Interscholastic Federation NorCal championship at Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento. If Kim's score was among the best six by golfers without teams, she will be qualified for the CIF State tournament at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga on Nov. 16.

Schneider runs to title

Junior Kevin Schneider of Fremont outlegged Saratoga senior Hari Iyer down the stretch to capture the De Anza Division cross country championship on Nov. 2.

Schneider crossed the finish line of the 2.95-mile Crystal Springs course in Belmont in 15:44, five seconds ahead of Iyer. Third place went to Jason Yow (16:10) of Monta Vista, who led the Matadors to the boys team championship.

Led by Schneider, Fremont earned fourth place and the final De Anza boys berth in the CCS championship meet. Monta Vista, Los Gatos and Saratoga finished ahead of the Firebirds and qualified for the CCS meet. The event is set is set for Nov. 13 at Toro Park in Salinas.

As the top three finishers from non-qualifying teams, Cupertino senior Xi-Len Yeh (17:07), Homestead sophomore Rishi Agrawal (17:10) and Lynbrook senior Luis Jensen (17:11) also will represent the DAL at CCS.

The top four girls teams were Cupertino, Los Gatos, Monta Vista and Saratoga. Two Lynbrook girls, sophomore MayC Huang (19:37) and freshman Cindy Ju (21:41), and Fremont junior Nikki Kinney (21:34) also will compete at the CCS event. Huang, who placed eighth in the league meet, easily had the best time among runners from non-qualifying teams. Kinney finished 24th and Ju took 25th. Homestead's best finisher, sophomore Jill Peanasky, placed 26th.

Based on school enrollment, Monta Vista and Fremont will compete in Division I. Cupertino, Lynbrook and Los Gatos will compete in Division II, and Saratoga is Division III.

Senior Emmanuel Cristobal was the second Fremont runner to finish the DAL race. He placed 16th with a time of 17:11. Sophomores Elijah Carrillo (22nd) and Travis McCleary (33rd) and senior Haruki Shimodo (39th) all were part of the fourth-place Firebirds. Homestead senior Chris Cook was 26th and freshman teammate Sameer Tharakan was 34th.

TKA rebounds from loss

A week after losing to Sacred Heart Prep of Atherton and a bid to repeat as Private Schools Athletic League football champion, The Kings Academy recovered for an easy 40-0 win over Saint Lawrence Academy. The victory improved TKA's record to 2-1 in the PSAL and 6-2-1 overall.

The Knights had suffered a 32-11 setback to Sacred Heart Prep on Oct. 30.

Kings never led against the Gators, who ran the ball more than 60 times with its ball-control offense.

David Norris scored the Knights' only touchdown on a 52-yard run in the third quarter. When sophomore Sam Sussman ran around left end for a two-point conversion, the Knights trailed by just 19-11. However, the Gators pulled away with 13 points in the fourth quarter.

Norris, who kicked a 20-yard field goal in the first period, was in on 16 tackles from his cornerback position. Linebackers Paul Montoro (23 tackles) and Tim Svozil (15) also were leaders of the busy Kings defense.

Meanwhile, Monta Vista celebrated Senior Night on Nov. 5 with a 21-3 triumph over Fremont and Homestead lost to Palo Alto at Diesner Field 55-0.

Monta Vista quarterback Jason Dias passed for two touchdowns, raising his season total to 17. Jason Custer's field goal accounted for Fremont's points.

Homestead (1-4, 5-4) hopes to close the season on a positive note after suffering a 55-0 defeat to Palo Alto. However, the Mustangs face the large task of playing at Los Gatos, Nov.12 at 7:30 p.m. Los Gatos clinched the De Anza crown with a 35-35 tie against Milpitas.

The Mustangs committed six turnovers in the lopsided loss to Paly last week.

Mustangs end on high note

After winning the SCVAL El Camino Division's volleyball championship with an 8-4 record last season and playing in the CCS Division II tournament, Homestead was looking forward to 2004 as a new member of the De Anza Division.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs, this season was nothing like 2003. But, led by junior outside hitter Maddy Baldwin, coach John Milkovich's team never gave up. Finally, in the last game of the season, the Mustangs picked up their first league win on Nov. 4, and spoiled Milpitas' senior night in the process.

Homestead nearly pulled off its first league win earlier in the week against Saratoga. The Mustangs won the first two games, 25-18 and 25-17, but the Falcons roared back to win three games in a row and the match.
