This picture of Fremont 'Union' High School's class of 1942 is one of the photographs the school is gathering up to scan and display as a way of honoring the school's 75-year history. But there are gaps in the years for which they have photos.
Fremont recalls senior classes

Nearly 75 years of squirming and mugging for the camera may be coming back to haunt all the graduating classes of Fremont High School. As part of a project to honor the school's past, administrators are collecting senior class photos—those that feature the entire class—to archive and display.

"We're about halfway there," said Sue Larson, assistant to the principal and the staff member collecting the photos. "We want to help everyone understand that this school has a rich history, that there were a lot of people who came before us."

Larson said Fremont hopes to simply borrow these senior class photos from local alumni for scanning, and that the photos will be returned. In addition to a digital archive of photos, the school will print out the scans and display them in a prominent location, such as the display in the main hallway that was set up for Fremont's grand re-opening ceremony in April.

"The grand re-opening definitely sparked interest in our history. Having all of those graduates in one place is humbling," Larson said. Her collection of photos starts with Fremont's first graduating class in 1929, but the next one after that is the class of 1936. Many of the gaps in the collection as of now are from early in the school's history, though a fair number of more recent graduating classes are missing photos in the collection—including the class of 2002.

"They're in closets and photo albums, just waiting to be found," Larson said. "It's a way to see how things have changed around here—some of the hairstyles and clothes are hilarious!" Classes have also gathered in different locations over the years—from in front of the historic façade of the Fremont building to the interior of the current gymnasium with a Firebird painted on the wall.
