Public Safety to set up holiday check point
By Jason Goldman-Hall
As a part of Santa Clara County's "Avoid the 13," driving-safety program, the city of Sunnyvale is running its own safety and sobriety checkpoint on Dec. 18, to educate the public about driving safety issues.

Sunnyvale public safety officers will man a checkpoint on the northbound stretch of Mathilda Avenue between Maude and San Aleso avenues on Dec. 18 from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Passing vehicle will be randomly selected and searched, with officers looking at the safety of the vehicle, proper licensing, seatbelt use and sobriety.

The checkpoint is similar to those set up by Avoid the 13 around the county

Members of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers will also be on hand to pass out educational materials at the checkpoint.

The 23-year old Avoid the 13 typically runs from the weekend before Christmas to the day after New Year's Day throughout Santa Clara County. The program also merged with San Mateo County to become the Avoid the 23 program on the peninsula.
