A simple check on a Sunnyvale resident ended with Sunnyvale fire crews cutting a hole in the woman's kitchen floor and officers arresting her grandson who was wanted on suspicion of a drug violation.
Officers arrived at 1064 Lily Ave. around 6 p.m. on Jan. 14 to check on an elderly woman after her son-in-law called public safety because she was being threatened by her grandson.
When officers got to the woman's house, they could see she was OK, but her grandson Ronald G. Trathen, 35—who was living with her—had a warrant out for his arrest for suspicion of a drug violation. He fled to the back of the house and hid in a bedroom.
After learning that there were guns inside the house, the officers ordered Trathen to leave the premises. But he refused, so the officers called the Sunnyvale Special Weapons and Tactics team.
As a safety precaution, officers asked neighbors to stay in their homes while the operation was going on, and used road flares to close off the area.
Just before 10 p.m., officers found Trathen hiding in the crawl space under the house but were unable to remove him. Fire crews were called in, and they cut a hole in the floor, allowing officers to remove Trathen and arrest him.
Trathen was charged with possession of a firearm, resisting a peace officer and a parole violation.
