A "Who's Who" of the Sunnyvale community turned out in their finest for the 40th annual Murphy Awards on Jan. 22. The event is a celebration of the people and businesses of the city.

The awards ceremony—with this year's boat trip "Cruisin' " theme—is an annual gala sponsored by the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce. In addition to being a place for Sunnyvale business and community leaders to mingle, it's also a showcase for a series of awards, recognizing outstanding people, organizations and contributions to the Sunnyvale community.

The awards fall into two categories—Community and Chamber—and the winners came from all corners of Sunnyvale.

Maria Matteis was named the Sunnyvale School District Teacher of the Year, and I-Heng McComb received the same award for the Fremont Union High School District. Pat Plant received Leadership Sunnyvale Alumnus of the Year and Sue Barbieri the Sunnyvale Community Services' Volunteer of the year.

Two awards went to people from Onizuka Air Force Base. Sgt. Alex X. Villalpando was named Enlisted Member of the Year and Captain Sean P. Hanlen was Officer of the Year.

Rounding out the 2004 Community Awards was Susan Dietz, who received the Moffett Park Business and Transportation Award.

For the 2004 Chamber Awards, Mike Johnson, from PennySaver, was named Ambassador of the Year and David Hunt, from Intero Real Estate Services received the Edna Costa Chamber Volunteer of the Year Award.

Sheila Collins of Pali Graphics earned the award of Chamber Member of the Year, and Toyota Sunnyvale was Chamber Business of the Year.

Camino Medical Group received the Service to the Community Award and Specialty Solid Waste & Recycling got the Community Spirit Award.

NASA Ames was given the Outstanding Service to the Local Business Community and Wyant & Smith Funeral Home took home the Pioneer Award.

Leslie Horton of eTime Solutions received the President's Award and Cassandra Nash from the Chamber received the Chair's Award.

And the ATHENA Award—a national award for outstanding, inspirational women in the community—was given to DBC Real Estate Service's Carla Cobb Davis.
