The city of Sunnyvale will be well represented in the Central Coast Section basketball play-offs, which begin this week. The boys and girls teams from all three area high schools-Fremont, Homestead and The King's Academy-have qualified for the single-elimination event which concludes with championship games March 4-5.
Boys basketball
After a 20-point victory over visiting Los Gatos in its final Santa Clara Valley Athletic League test of the season, Fremont appears ready for the Division I tournament.
The Firebirds concluded the regular season with a 10-2 record in De Anza Division play, second only to unbeaten league champion Palo Alto. With two league losses to Palo Alto and a December tournament loss to St. Joseph of Alameda as the only blemishes on their 24-3 record, the Firebirds enter the play-offs as the No. 3 seed in Division I.
The Firebirds' first opponent will be Salinas (15-11) on Feb. 24, 7 p.m., at Fremont.
Homestead finished its De Anza Division schedule with a 50-45 triumph over Gunn. Mark McLaughlin pumped in 16 points and William Tsai added 10 for the Mustangs (5-7 in league play), whose overall record of 16-10 earned them a berth in the CCS Division II tourney.
The Mustangs open the playoffs on Feb. 23, 7 p.m., at home against Riordan.
The King's Academy, which closed out its Private Schools Athletic League schedule with a senior night victory over Pinewood on Feb. 17, hopes to add to a school-record win total during the play-offs. The Knights take a 21-7 overall mark into the Division V tournament that begins Feb. 26 at Burlingame High School.
Girls basketball
Fremont finished the regular season with a wallop, as senior center Kelly Bushnell and sophomore guard Carol Hoang sparked a 53-29 triumph over Los Altos on Feb. 16.
The Firebirds, who finished fourth in the SCVAL's El Camino Division with a 7-5 record, enter the Division I play-offs with an overall mark of 13-13. Their first game is set for Feb. 23, 7 p.m., at San Benito.
