Carol Hoang, Fremont's playmaking point guard, turned some heads as a freshman in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League's El Camino Division. But this season as a sophomore coaches saw more than they wanted of the Firebirds' 5-foot-5 dynamo.
In fact, after watching her score, pass the ball to open teammates and take it away from opponents, the El Camino coaches named Hoang to the all-SCVAL El Camino first team. Joining Monta Vista's Sophia Tam and Santa Clara's Jackie Fountain, Hoang was one of three sophomores named to the elite squad.
Wilcox, which ran away with the league championship, placed three players on the first team--sisters Dacia and Derisa Taleni, who were the co-Most Valuable Players, and senior Tiana Barr. Oanh Pham of Santa Clara also was picked to the first team.
Cupertino senior Lisa William, Fremont junior Marissa Cabana and Monta Vista seniors Lorraine Lau and Sandra Kou were named to the second team. Fremont senior Kelly Bushnell, Cupertino junior Karin Tanaka and Monta Vista freshman Kaila Li received honorable mention.
Kelly Bodwin of Monta Vista was named the Most Valuable Player for the El Camino Division's junior varsity league.
Three Homestead players were recognized for their efforts in the De Anza Division. Sophomores Kate Mower and Cheryl Ichikawa were named to the second team and senior Melissa Manuel received honorable mention.
Soccer laurels for Knights
After rolling to the Private Schools Athletic League soccer championship, the girls of The King's Academy were rewarded with seven first team selections on the All-PSAL team.
Leading the honorees was senior defender Kim Mitchell, who was named co-Most Valuable player. Other first team picks were defender Heather Hays, goalkeeper Hannah Hays, midfielders Claire Gill and Lauren Carr, and forwards Faith Tucker and Amanda Westwood. Defender Claire Westwood and midfielder Emily Henderson earned second team honors and midfielder Kim Early gained honorable mention.
