Hovey stars, but Homestead girls lose
By Mike Barnhart
Although Homestead's girls won half of the 12 events, Monta Vista prevailed 113-66 in a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division swimming meet on March 18.

Amber Hovey, an All-American for Homestead last season, won the 100-yard butterfly in 59.12, five seconds better than the CCS qualifying time. She also swam the lead-off leg of the winning 200 freestyle relay. Jackie Laird, Jessica Schweisow and Yoshiko Shimizu combined to turn in a winning time of 1:49.25. Emily Pool won the 200 IM and swam a leg for the Mustangs' victorious medley relay team.

Monta Vista's Dominique Lazarovici (200 and 500 free) and Andrea Pang (50 and 100 free) were double winners and Courtney Rudolph took the diving competition. Lazarovici and Pang also teamed up with Nicole Ngo and Hazuki Watanabe to win the 400 free relay.

The Matadors improved their record to 1-1. Homestead is 0-1.

Meanwhile, Monta Vista's boys had an easier time of it, winning 133-31. The Matadors took first in every event, improving their record to 1-1. Ben Casavant and Russ Underwood both won two events and joined Kevin Luu and David Wong on the winning medley relay team.

In an El Camino Division meet on March 19, Fremont's girls won five events against visiting Cupertino, but lost 98.5-68.5.

The Firebirds were led by junior Aly Meyer, who won the 200 free and the 200 IM and swam the first leg of the victorious 400 relay.

Cupertino won the boys' meet 132-36, but Fremont's Larry Wen was a winner in the 100 fly.

TKA baseball team 6-0

The King's Academy baseball team has started the new season by winning six in a row.

The Knights, coached by Monta Vista graduate Jeff McDonald, have a .379 team batting average after the first six games.

Junior catcher Tim Svozil and junior shortstop Tim Biederman are the top hitters thus far. Svozil is batting .650 with 13 hits, three home runs and eight RBIs. Biederman, who leads the team with nine RBIs, is batting at a .471 clip.

The pitching staff has been led by senior Jason Linn, who has put together a nifty early ledger of 3-0 and an earned run average of 0.82. In 17 innings pitched, Linn has struck out 18 and walked just six. His best outing was a complete-game, 2-hit shutout against Mission San Jose on March 11.

After a week off for a school-wide mission in Mexico, the Knights resume action March 30 at San Lorenzo Valley in Felton. Two days later, on April 1, they host Homestead.
