Groans arose through the Foods Room at Fremont High School on March 18 when Michael Dotson, executive chef of Evvia Estiatorio in Palo Alto, demonstrated the Hellenic cuisine typical of his popular restaurant. Some of that cuisine happened to include squid.

But students were all smiles when they sampled a selection of Greek salads and baklava after the demonstration, thrilled that the first cooking demonstration of its kind in the Fremont Union High School District went off so well.

'He was awesome!' said 17-year-old Vinodh Nedyavila, a member of the culinary club responsible for bringing Dotson to campus. Nedyavila added that Dotson's appearance was all due to the efforts of the club's advisor, Fremont math teacher Khir Johari, who was honored by his students in a surprise ceremony after the demonstration.
