Library is precious place,
and people are ruining it

I've been in the Sunnyvale Public Library three times in the past week, and I don't like what I see going on there, and no, for once, it's not that sign-waving Rich Shapiro.

I have seen people coming in off the streets, reeking of alcohol and threatening the staff with legal action when they're unable to use the Internet terminals.

I have seen many homeless people using the Internet computers. You'd think they are looking for work or maybe some sort of government assistance. Nope, they're looking at hardcore pornography. In some cases, I have seen patrons seated beside children and still looking at pornography.

I have seen grown adults whine like children when confronted with overdue fines, and when I say overdue fines, I mean $1 or $2. They hold up the checkout line with their excuses and arguments and then go outside, climb into their brand-new SUV and drive home.

I have seen adults do nothing when their children run around like animals, screaming their heads off. "Do you realize this is a library?" I asked a woman whose children were climbing on the chairs and screaming the other day. The woman looked bored at me and said "Yeah?"

The library is a precious, precious resource and these people are ruining it for the rest of us, and they're taking advantage of the good nature of the staff.
