Stay out of the way of The King's Academy's baseball team, because you may get hit.
After all, the Knights have been hitting just about everything that opposing pitchers have thrown their way thus far in the Private Schools Athletic League season.
The Knights went on an offensive rampage during a recent stretch of PSAL games, stretching their record to 4-0 in league and 10-1 overall. A 21-0 whipping of Pinewood followed a 19-2 pounding of Harker and an 11-1 handling of St. Lawrence.
Against Pinewood on April 13, TKA scored nine runs in the second inning and 10 more in the fifth. The Knights collected 18 hits and benefited from seven errors. Tim Biederman, Danny Clarkson, David Norris and Tim Svozil all ripped home runs for the Knights.
Biederman led the attack with three hits and five runs-batted-in. Norris and Jordan McDonald both had three hits and three RBIs. Svozil drove in four runs with his homer and single. Evan Chaney added two Fhits and two RBIs.
Winning pitcher A.J. Ghiossi threw the first four innings, and Chaney struck out the side in the fifth.
The Knights also had the bats working against St. Lawrence, totaling 12 hits, including two each by winning pitcher Jason Linn, Norris, Biederman and Svozil.
Linn struck out eight and scattered five hits while tossing the first five innings.
Eight Knights knocked in runs against Harker in a game shortened in the middle of the fifth by the mercy rule. Linn led the offense with three hits and three RBIs. Svozil also had three hits, and Bryan McDonald, Chaney, Norris and Caleb Rosado all had two.
Homestead on track
Joyce Chang placed first in the discus and shot put to lead Homestead's girls to their first victory of the spring. The Mustangs beat visiting Saratoga, 64-63, over visiting Saratoga in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division meet.
Oshi Bose (100), Diana Moberg (200) and Megan Brady (300 hurdles) also placed first for the Mustangs.
Homestead's Khang Pham won three events in the boys meet, but Saratoga prevailed 67-59. The junior athlete placed first in the 100- and 200-meter sprints and the triple jump. His winning effort of 43-1 is the seventh best triple jump in the Central Coast Section this spring.
Senior Jason Anthony (400) and junior Derek Okamura (long jump) also won events against the Mustangs.
Homestead junior William Tsai owns the section's second best discus throw (159-04). Tsai achieved that mark with a second-place toss in the recent St. Francis Invitational.
Against Saratoga, Tsai was a winner in both weight events, heaving the platter 158-6 and muscling the shot put 48-0. His shot put effort ranks ninth in the CCS. Teammate Alex Mrozack isn't far behind with his best effort of 44-10.
Fremont's Ruben Chagoya owns the ninth-best discus effort in the section, a winning mark of 144-8 during a meet with Mountain View. Firebird junior Kevin Schneider owns the section's 12th fastest time (9:48.67) in the 3,200.
Fremont senior Kelly Bushnell, the defending CCS girls discus champion, is rounding into form after basketball season. Currently she stands fourth in the section with a best of 114-4, which she achieved at the Stanford Invitational. Bushnell's best shot put effort, 35-11 in a dual meet against Santa Clara, ranks 10th.
Fremont makes splash
Although the depth of Lynbrook's boys and girls swim teams was way more than Fremont could handle in a recent El Camino Division meet, three Firebirds proved to be too much for the Vikings.
Sophomore Larry Wen was the only Fremont boy to win an event during the April 8 contest, a 125-35 defeat at Lynbrook. Wen placed first in the 50-yard butterfly in 56.99 seconds, then took the 500 freestyle in 4:56.01.
Junior Aly Meyer and freshman Ellen Umeda shined for the Lady Firebirds in their 112-49 loss. Meyer won both the 200 and 500 free races, while Umeda captured first in the 100 breaststroke.
Dodge wins twice
Homestead's Kurt Dodge was the medalist in the Mustangs' 195-212 golf win over Palo Alto on April 11. He posted a one-under par 34 at Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course as the Mustangs improved their De Anza Division record to 8-3. Dodge also was the low scorer a week earlier in a win against Gunn, carding an even par 36 at Palo Alto Muni.
Playing for Fremont's boys team, talented Naomi Kim earned co-medalist honors while leading the Firebirds to victory over Cupertino on April 12. Kim shared a low score of one-over par 31 with Cupertino's David Yoo during Fremont's four-stroke win at Deep Cliff Golf Course.
Fremont pair honored
Two Fremont soccer players were inadvertently left off of the all-SCVAL soccer lists that were published in the April 13 edition of the Sun.
Kent Fogleman was a first-team selection for the De Anza Division boys, and Shayna Fogleman was a first-team selection for the El Camino girls.
