Three juveniles were arrested in Sunnyvale on April 17 after setting off a chemical reaction outside Starbucks at 1677 Hollenbeck Ave.
According to Sunnyvale Public Safety Captain Craig Farley, just after 9:30 p.m., the three juveniles--two Sunnyvale residents and one Santa Clara resident--set off a chemical reaction in a closed container that then exploded outside the coffee shop, leaving 11 customers with watering eyes.
Farley said the department of public safety would not specify what chemicals were in the container, to prevent other similar incidents. He said, however, that they were household chemicals that did not produce any serious medical conditions.
Farley said all the victims declined medical treatment, and some witnesses were able to identify the vehicle in which the juveniles fled the scene. The vehicle was later located and those inside were arrested.
The manager of the Starbucks said he could not comment on the incident.
Each of the three individuals was charged with use of a destructive device, which is a felony.
