Lynbrook junior Nilasha Ghosh claimed the spotlight at the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division swimming finals, but there was plenty of attention for two Fremont swimmers as well.
Ghosh grabbed much attention by recording All-American times while winning the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke, but sophomore Larry Wen and junior Alysia Meyer both made two big splashes for Fremont.
Wen won the boys 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke championships on May 6 at Lynbrook, and Meyer claimed first place in the girls 200 free and 200 individual medley.
Wen and Meyer will compete in the Central Coast Section meet this weekend at Stanford University. Boys and girls preliminary races will be held on May 13, with the finals the next day.
Wen, who won the 200 IM in meet-record time at last year's El Camino championships, skipped that event this year. But he did set a new league record in the breaststroke, covering the distance in 1:00.92. His winning time in the 200 free was 1:47.19. Meyer won the girls IM in 2:18.08 and the 200 free in 2:02.50.
Fremont junior Lauren Carter took third in the 500 free and freshman teammate Ellen Umeda was third in the 100 breast. The Firebirds also picked up a third in the 200 medley relay. Freshman Chelsea Lofland, Umeda, junior Angela Cascone and sophomore Amy Lindsay combined to swim a CCS-qualifying mark of 2:03.49.
El Camino track finals
Fremont's Kelly Bushnell, who captured the CCS girls discus championship as a junior, passed the first test on the road back to the CCS meet by winning both throwing events at the SCVAL El Camino Division finals May 4 at Mountain View High.
Bushnell's winning efforts of 107-7 in the discus and 34-0 in the shot put earned her positions in the SCVAL Qualifier May 14 at Los Gatos High. The Qualifier determines which six athletes in each event will advance to the Central Coast Section trials. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. and the first track event is set for 11. Athletes earned a spot in the qualifier by having one of the top 16 marks in the merged finals results from both the El Camino and De Anza divisions.
Other area athletes to win El Camino championships were the Homestead 400 relay team, Fremont's Kevin Schneider (3,200) and Patrick Van Zandt (discus), Homestead's Khang Pham (triple jump) and Alex Morzack (shot put).
Homestead top seed
Homestead's boys volleyball team earned the top seed in the upcoming Central Coast Section tournament by closing out the SCVAL with a pair of wins and a share of the league championship with Los Gatos.
The Mustangs, with an overall record of 22-2, will open the 16-team tourney on May 12 with a home match against The King's Academy (16-11), the Private Schools Athletic League champion. The match is set for 7 p.m. The winner will meet the winner of the San Lorenzo Valley-St. Francis match in the quarterfinals at Santa Clara High on May 14.
Los Gatos was awarded the second seed and Fremont picked up the 14th seed. The Firebirds will travel for their first-round match, tangling with No. 3 Aptos.
Semi-finals will be played on May 17 and the finals two nights later at Santa Clara.
Homestead wins twice
Homestead (9-6 league, 11-11 overall) won three El Camino baseball games in a row before falling to Monta Vista recently.
Freshman Evan Marshall's complete-game mound effort and Deek Hargis' RBI triple paced a 4-3 win over Gunn on April 30. Two days later, junior Kyle Dukes pitched a 2-hitter and notched six strikeouts in an 8-0 win over Fremont. Craig Moberg led the Mustangs with two hits and two RBIs.
Fremont bounced back on May 5 with a 5-3 triumph over Saratoga. Dan Bergeron, the winning pitcher, helped his own cause with a three-run homer during the Firebirds' five-run third inning. Nathan Cathcart relieved Bergeron late in the game and earned a save.
Softball team wins
Homestead (3-6, 10-12) scored a pair of wins in De Anza Division softball play last week, edging Mountain View 3-2 and Los Gatos 4-3. Tina Fukumoto (three hits) paced the offense against Mountain View, and Courtney Gosnell (two hits, three RBIs) led the way against Los Gatos. Melanie Gularte, who had 10 strikeouts against Los Gatos, was the winning pitcher in both games.
In an El Camino game, Fremont beat Gunn 3-2 thanks in part to a home run by sophomore Samantha Ellis.
