Oreste 'Rusty' Allario

Longtime Sunnyvale resident Oreste "Rusty" Allario died on May 12 of heart failure. He was 91.

Allario was born in San Jose on March 11, 1914. He met his wife, Gladys, during an outing in Santa Cruz in July 1941. The couple married in November of that year.

They moved to Sunnyvale more than 60 years ago and opened the Sunnyvale Hardware Store near the intersection of what is now El Camino Real and S. Sunnyvale Avenue in 1947.

Allario opened Allario Appliance shortly after and ran both businesses until the mid-1980s.

He was a 57-year member of the Sunnyvale Host Lions and was also involved in the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce, the Elks, the Shriners and the Masons.

Allario's wife died on Oct. 9, 2004. He is survived by two children, Stephen Allario of Mountain View and Janis Bautista of Sunnyvale, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
