By Mike Barnhart
High school track and field athletes spent most of May competing in various meets, striving to qualify for the next level. At the same time, the high school track stars of tomorrow were having their own competition.

After a series of dual meets, boys and girls from 12 area middle schools from four different districts squared off at the Valley Junior High School Athletic League track meet.

Hyde and Miller were the top schools overall. Hyde's sixth-grade girls and eighth-grade girls won team championships, while Miller captured the seventh-grade girls and sixth-grade boys titles.

Miller also took third in the seventh-grade and eighth-grade boys divisions. Blach of Los Altos was the top point producer among eighth-grade boys teams, scoring four more than Hyde.

The best overall performance was turned in by Hyde eighth-grader Kyle Moyles, who scored victories in the 100, 200 and 800 events.

Sprinter Devan Ramsour's victories in the 100- and 200-meter dashes helped Cupertino's seventh-grade boys finish second to Kennedy. Mikkie Louthan of Sunnyvale finished first among seventh grade boys in the 1,600 run and second in the 800.

Sunnyvale's Jordan Gibson, Sean Dinga and Shaq Green paced their team to second place in the sixth-grade boys team competition. Gibson zipped to wins in the 100 and 200. Dinga was third in the 100 and second in the 200, while Green was third in the 60 hurdles. Sunnyvale totaled 54 points, just four behind first-place Miller.

Alexis Tershay of Columbia was the fastest 1,600 runner among girls. The eight-grader ran the four-lap event in 5:26. Another local eighth-grade girl to win a race was Cupertino's Diana Charrier, who captured the 800.

Caarli Haasbrock of Sunnyvale was fastest in the 800 among seventh-grade girls. Teammate Shelby Morita was third in the 1,600.

Alpha Diallo of Sunnyvale took second in the hurdles for eighth-grade boys. Sunnyvale's Kristina Roome garnered second in the eighth-grade girls 200, finishing just .04 better than third-place Anita Crumlin of Cupertino. Ada Chibukhchyan of Cupertino was second in the 200 dash for sixth-grade girls.

Eighth-grade event winners included Hyde girls Bobbi Kyle (60 hurdles, 200) and Sifon Ndon (100) and Miller boy Gene Burinsky (1,600).
