Department of Public Safety investigators are still looking into a shooting that left a Sunnyvale man dead and another man injured in the early morning hours of July 12.
Just after 4 a.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired near Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road and Alberta Avenue.
According to Lt. Mark Frise, officers found a car on the sidewalk wedged up against a cement wall, with Sunnyvale resident Cephus Brown, 18, in the driver's seat. They also found 22-year-old Laville Harvey of East Palo Alto a short distance away with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.
Both men were transported to local hospitals, where Brown was declared dead. Frise said Harvey is in stable condition at a local hospital. At press time, investigators had no motive or further details on the shooting, but Frise said they were checking a number of leads.
Detective Jose Ramirez said that as far as he knew, Brown was not involved in any of Sunnyvale's street gangs.
A collection of flowers, balloons, pictures, comments, and personal items such as bottles of wine, packs of cigarettes and CDs have been placed at the site of the accident, a spontaneous memorial erected by Brown's friends and family. The funeral for Brown will be held July 20 at 11 a.m. at the Wyant & Smith Funeral Home, 174 N. Sunnyvale Avenue.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Sunnyvale Investigations Bureau at 408.730.7120.
