As the District 44 Little League all-star tournaments wrapped up last weekend, no Sunnyvale baseball teams captured championship flags, but several teams turned in memorable performances.
9-10 all-stars
Behind the one-two pitching combination of Davis Messer and Brandon Farrell, Sunnyvale Metro posted two more wins to finish with a 4-2 record and fourth place in the 14-team tourney.
Metro started with a 3-0 triumph over Cupertino American on July 11, as Messer fired a 2-hitter. The right-hander struck out 11 and did not walk one.
Messer scored his team's first run in the first inning, and Daniel Chae helped seal the deal with a double in the sixth. Chae's hit chased home Bailey Owen and Nick Molina with two insurance runs.
Two days later, Farrell pitched four innings of 1-hit ball in Metro's 14-4 triumph over Serra. Farrell struck out eight for Metro, which scored six runs in the first and never trailed. Yuki Umeda paced the Metro offense with two doubles and two RBIs.
Metro jumped out to a 5-0 lead the next day against Santa Clara Westside, but Westside rolled to a 24-8 win.
Serra was the only other local squad to win a game, surprising a strong Campbell team 4-3. Pablo Lozano, with last-inning help from Jeffrey Hardy, allowed just four hits in the win. Serra, which cashed in six Campbell errors for four unearned runs, managed just two hits, one a triple by Cory McGee. Serra later lost to Mountain View and Metro.
11-year-olds
Serra reached the final four of the 12-team tourney, winning two of three games before being eliminated by Briarwood. Serra sandwiched an eight-inning, 5-4 triumph over Cupertino National and an 8-2 victory over Santa Clara Westside around a 14-2 defeat to Mountain View.
