Sunnyvale skateboard park draws the big time
By Jason Goldman-Hall
In less than two months, world-class skateboarders, BMX riders and other athletes will roll into San Jose as part of the Mountain Dew Action Sports Tour.

But Sunnyvale is getting a sneak preview of the action on July 30 when the 2005 Free Flow Tour, an amateur version of the Action Sports Tour, comes to Sunnyvale Skatepark in Fair Oaks Park.

Unlike the Action Sports Tour, which features established stars, the Free Flow Tour is a chance for local athletes to shine as they compete for a chance to take part in the Dew Action Sports Tour's Playstation Pro event in Orlando, Fla., in October.

"We're excited about the event," John Pilger, Sunnyvale's communications officer, said. "This once again shows what a great skatepark Sunnyvale has and how highly it is thought of by the people who practice the sport."

Winners of the Sunnyvale event will be flown, along with winners from other cities around the country, to Portland, Ore., for the Free Flow Tour Finals. Two of the bunch in Portland will receive wild-card entries into the Orlando event.

For newer competitors, there will be a junior jam category for anyone 18 and under. The main team event, also for 18 and under riders, will award winning riders a trip to Oregon and a shot at a trip to Florida.
