Robert Evans rides at Sunnyvale Skatepark almost every day, but the home bowl advantage eluded him on July 30 when he competed against dozens of other skateboarders.
The Free Flow Tour, an amateur version of the Dew Action Sports Tour, attracted 64 skaters age 18 and younger to the skatepark in Fair Oaks Park.
For Robert, the Free Flow tour was his entrée into competitive skating. He and other first-time competitors skated in the Junior Jam, where they had 10 minutes to show their best tricks.
"He's been skating since he was about 6," Robert's dad, Bob Evans. said. "He wants to get good enough to where he's sponsored."
In the end 9-year-old Hunter Scribner from Elk Grove skated to win the Junior Jam and walked off with the prize package, which included a new skateboard and a Napster download card.
Another out-of-towner came out on top in the main event. Jeff Ward, 18, of Stockton will advance to the Free Flow Tour finals in Portland, Ore., where he'll compete against other regional winners from around the country. The top skater in the finals will win a wild card berth in the Dew Action Sports Tour's Playstation Pro event in Orlando, Fla., in October to compete against the pros.
While 27 Sunnyvale skaters competed in their hometown Free Flow Tour, spokesman Glen Braunsdorf said there was a large regional turnout for the event. Second-place winner Adam Emory, 14, came from Manteca, and third place went to 17-year-old Joey Flores of Hollister.
The Sunnyvale event was a boys' day out, with just one girl entered in the competition. Tour manager Dan Colberg said female participation varies at each location.
"In some cities, lots of girls enter," Colberg said. "In some cities, we don't get any."
The Dew Action Sports Tour rolls into San Jose's HP Pavilion on Sept. 10. For more information about the tour, visit www.dewactionsportstour.com.
