Thanks to funds from the Federal Surface Transportation Program, a number of damaged Sunnyvale roads will get facelifts.
Sunnyvale is getting $1.5 million over the next two years for roadway repairs on Kifer Road and Mary, Fair Oaks and Hollenbeck avenues.
According to deputy communications officer Adam Levermore-Rich, the city is getting $490,000 for the current fiscal year, and $1.1 million for next year. In addition, the city provides $250,000 in tax revenue for pavement repairs.
The funds will be used for the repair and reconstruction of Mary Avenue between Homestead and The Dalles avenues. Weather permitting, the project--which does not have a start date yet--should last two to three months.
Asphalt and concrete work will be done on four stretches of road, each project lasting four to six weeks. The affected areas are Mary Avenue between Washington and Carson Avenue, Fair Oaks Avenue between Evelyn Avenue and El Camino Real, Hollenbeck Avenue between Homestead Road and Alberta Avenue and a section of Kifer Road.
Levermore-Rich said the city hopes no further maintenance will be required for 20 to 30 years.
The Federal Surface Transportation Program is part of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, reauthorized on Aug. 10 of this year. The act started on June 9, 1998.
