Armour's goal marks courageous comeback
By Mike Barnhart
When Laine Armour's shot splashed past the Santa Clara goalie late in a girls water polo game last week, the goal had little to do with the outcome. Fremont had already sewn up its sixth win in seven league games.

But Armour's shot had everything to do with a personal victory--a comeback victory.

Armour's goal during her team's 17-1 win at Santa Clara on Oct. 6 placed an exclamation point on her first game action since a summer automobile accident left her with a broken back and a ruptured spleen.

"She's a great story," said Fremont coach Steve Puccinelli, who has directed the Firebirds' fine early showing in the El Camino Division.

Since a loss to unbeaten Los Gatos on Sept. 20, Fremont captured four straight El Camino contests, including an 11-6 win over defending champion Lynbrook and an exciting double-overtime triumph over Homestead.

Junior Samantha Ellis led the team against Lynbrook, pouring in a school record nine goals.

"She shattered the team record for most goals in a game and she is on pace to set a team record of goals in a season," Puccinelli praised. "Seniors Aly Meyer, Kristin Sterling and Maddy McNeil have also picked up their games and should post personal bests."

Ellis, whose six-goal effort paced an earlier overtime win at Monta Vista, tallied three goals to lead the 7-6 triumph over Homestead on Sept. 25.

Joining Ellis as Fremont goal scorers were Meyer, Sterling and juniors Sara DeCastro and Aimee Lindsey. Emily Pool, Jen Coryell and Kelsey Desmond scored two goals apiece for Homestead.
