Cupertino Middle School wins league softball crown

Cupertino Middle School's 7th-grade softball team scored seven times in the fifth inning against Kennedy and held on for a 10-4 victory and the Valley Junior High School Athletic League finals.

The game, played Oct. 13 at Sunnyvale Middle School, concluded a 13-0 season for head coach Tony Phillips' Cupertino squad, which also included sixth-graders.

Mariah Chen drove in three runs and winning pitcher Cathy Stolizka struck out 12 batters to pace Cupertino. Key hits and runs in the decisive fifth were delivered by Chen, Helen Femmel, Tamsin Avra, Gina Halenbeck and Marissa Hampton. Hannah Montalban and Paige Wallace also scored.

Earlier, Hannah Strotman drove in Katie Puziol for one Cupertino run and scored another on Jazmyne Biglarderi's hit.

Kennedy, which led 4-3 entering the fifth, had opened the scoring on Sammy Barry's RBI double in the first. Two innings later, Kristin Tatsuno's hit drove in Andie Stager and Mariel Little. Michelle Hara scored Kennedy's other run on Carla Mack's single.

Other members of the triumphant Cupertino team were Taylor Groseclose, Gina Halenbeck, Kristina Luotto, Katrina Pederson and Amanda Nelson.

Cupertino reached the title game by beating Egan of Mountain View 10-5. Kennedy advanced by topping Lawson 10-3.
