Tough weekend for local football teams
By Mike Barnhart
It was a tough weekend for area high school football teams.

After Los Gatos quickly quashed any Homestead hopes for an upset win on Friday night, The King's Academy received some of the same medicine against Bay League rival Sacred Heart Prep, 34-7, in Atherton the next afternoon. Meanwhile, Fremont hung tough in a non-league game at Saratoga, before bowing 15-12.

Los Gatos scored 28 first-quarter points against Homestead and rolled to a 49-6 victory at Diesner Field. The Mustangs, now 1-4 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and 3-5 overall, prevented a shutout when Jay Atkins scored on a 2-yard touchdown run.

The Mustangs hope to get back on track when they return to Diesner on Nov. 4 for a non-league game against Cupertino. The Pioneers' slate slipped to 1-4 in the El Camino Division and 2-6 overall when they dropped a tough 20-15 decision to Gunn.

Fremont, now 4-4 overall, is still very much alive in the race for the El Camino championship at 3-1 with two games to play. The Firebirds must beat Lynbrook at Cupertino on Nov. 4 to stay in contention heading into the final week of the season.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Firebirds scored first against Saratoga on a 36-yard pass from Jason Custer to Shelton Swoopes. The PAT kick attempt failed. On the ensuing kick-off Alex Lagemann caught the ball on the 18, faked a reverse to Scott Newberry and raced 82 yards up the left sideline. The PAT kick made it 7-6.

After a scoreless third period, which featured punter Juan Arce twice pinning the Falcons back with kicks that rolled inside their 10-yard line, Fremont regained the lead two minutes into the fourth quarter.

Julius Mills' 4-yard run put the Firebirds ahead 12-7 with 10:03 remaining in the game. A two-point conversion pass attempt fell incomplete.

Saratoga, which lost several fumbles during the contest due to the hard-hitting Fremont tacklers, again answered quickly. After a nifty halfback option pass from Newberry to Lagemann moved the ball deep into Fremont territory, Newberry romped up the middle from eight yards out with the go-ahead score. The Falcons' two-point try was successful, making the score 15-12.

When Saratoga drove later in the period and gained a first-and-goal at Fremont's 3, it appeared the Falcons finally were going to put the contest out of reach. But, it didn't happen.

Instead, Mills made an interception on fourth-and-goal. He stepped in front of an out pattern and sprinted 30 yards up the sideline to give the Firebirds hope.

But, moments later--after Custer's complete passes to Swoopes and Mills put the Firebirds within striking distance to go ahead--Saratoga ended the threat with an interception near the goal line with 39 seconds to go.

The King's Academy managed just a third-quarter TD run and a PAT kick by David Maemone against Sacred Heart. The Bay League loss dropped the Knights to 4-2-1 overall and 2-2 and out of play-off contention.
