The first major demolition hurdle in the Downtown Sunnyvale redevelopment project is finished, and a new temporary parking lot is open in time for the traditional start of the holiday shopping season--the day after Thanksgiving.
The condemned parking structure on N. Mathilda Avenue, between Iowa and Washington avenues, is gone. The north half of the space--between Washington and McKinley avenues--is now temporary parking. The southern half will be closed off and used as a staging area when the second phase of demolition begins at the start of 2006.
When finished, the "lifestyle center" will include one million square feet of retail space, almost 250,000 square feet of office space, close to 300 homes for sale and a movie theater.
Project manager Jane Vaughan said she was happy to be through the first phase with time to spare before shopping begins because one of the main concerns of local merchants was dirt and noise driving customers away.
The temporary lot has 737 parking space. This will be the primary parking for Macy's employees and customers when Phase 2 begins. In the next phase, the empty mall building between Macy's and Target will be destroyed, and the parking lot at Washington and Sunnyvale Avenues will be torn up.
