The Sunnyvale Swim Club was a big winner at Pacific Swimming's annual awards banquet in January. Pacific Swimming, one of USA Swimming's four regional arms, recognized Nick Jufiar, the head coach of SUNN, and swimmers Russ Underwood and Olivia Smith for efforts throughout the 2005 season.
With more than 15,000 swimmers and more than 100 teams to choose from, Pacific Swimming selected Jufiar as Age Group Coach of the Year and honored Underwood (15-16) and Smith (11-12) with Outstanding Age Group Swimmer awards.
Smith also was recognized as Western Zones Most Outstanding Swimmer for her performance at the all-star event held in Utah last August.
Underwood, a senior at Monta Vista and a six-year member of SUNN, signed a National Letter of Intent with UC-Davis last fall. He is the Central Coast Section's defending champion in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100.
"The accomplishments these individuals were honored for are not insignificant for them personally or the Sunnyvale community they represent," noted Sunnyvale Swim Club vice president Eelco Bergman.
SUNN, which provides its members with pre-competitive and competitive age group programs, serves 180 to 190 year-round swimmers and 20 to 30 seasonal swimmers, according to Bergman. A winter program, focusing on stroke development and improvement, is under way and runs through March 23.
