Marshall tosses Mustangs to their third league win
By MIKE BARNHART
Mother Nature has not been kind to Homestead's baseball team this season, raining out six of the Mustangs' first nine league games. In fact, foul weather allowed Homestead to play just one of its three scheduled games last week. But what a game it was!
Sophomore Evan Marshall's 2-hit pitching and senior Mike Lawler's first-inning, run-scoring triple gave the Mustangs a 1-0 triumph over visiting Santa Clara on April 1. Homestead improved to 3-0 in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, while Santa Clara fell to 7-2.
Marshall, who has been the starting pitcher and winner in all three of Homestead's division games, struck out eight Bruins while pitching all seven innings. He also scored the game's only run on Lawler's triple--one of just three hits the Mustangs were able to get off of Santa Clara hurler Brook Tamone.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again on April 6, 7 p.m., at Washington Park in Santa Clara.
While Homestead played just once, Fremont got three games in last week, including two wins over Saratoga. In both victories, Kevin Brahney and Rob Ramer led the way.
First, on March 28 at home, Ramer rapped two hits and drove in three runs and Brahney was the winning pitcher in an 8-2 triumph. Four days later in a 4-2 win at Saratoga, Brahney belted a home run and Ramer earned the pitching decision.
Fremont finished the week with a 4-4 El Camino Division record. The Firebirds play at Lynbrook on April 6 at 3:30, before beginning play in the Peninsula Easter Classic on April 8.
