Tax return non-filers may be eligible for tax credit

By HUGH BIGGAR

The IRS, partnering with San Jose community organizations, will provide free income tax assistance at a special Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site for low-income, elderly or disabled individuals and persons with limited English proficiency Aug. 12.

Volunteer tax preparers will be available to help individuals and families file tax returns for the past six years. Volunteers will also help individuals and families determine their earned income tax credit, if any.

According to VITA, even non-filers may be entitled to $4,400 in earned income tax credit in 2005 (or $12,000 for the last three years).

Individuals with incomes below $38,000 for tax years 2000 through 2005 are encouraged to attend the event, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Most Holy Trinity Church and School, 2040 Nassau Drive, San Jose. Parking is available in a lot on Cunningham Avenue next to the school. For more information visit www.irs.gov.
