Arrest made in downtown shooting after 'Beerbust'
By JASON GOLDMAN-HALL
A Palo Alto resident could face almost 20 years in prison if convicted in connection with an early morning shooting in downtown Sunnyvale on Oct. 15.
Anthony Green, 20, was charged with shooting San Jose resident Brian Sabathia, 20, after a confrontation inside The Abyss nightclub at 146 S. Murphy Ave..
Department of Public Safety Deputy Chief Tim Johnson said there were a number of officers in the area at the time--just after 2 a.m., when many bars and clubs closed--so they were able to arrest Green and begin first aid on Sabathia almost immediately. Sabathia is in stable condition.
"We do have issues downtown from time to time," Johnson said, "but we try to saturate the area with officers."
According to the club's website, the event that night, "Beerbust 3," was supposed to be limited to people at least 21 years of age. Both Green and Sabathia are 20. Abyss representatives could not be reached for comment.
Green is charged with assault with a firearm--and enhancements for personal use and causing great bodily injury. He will be back in court Nov. 11.
