Homestead plays Gilroy tough, but local Mustangs fall by two

By Mike Barnhart

Although Gilroy ran off 15 straight points to open the second quarter of a Central Coast Section Division I playoff game last week, there was no quit in the Homestead girls basketball team.

Instead, the visiting Mustangs saddled up, hunkered down and made a game of it. In fact, the Mustangs from Cupertino outscored the Mustangs of Gilroy in every period except the rough second. And when Homestead held Gilroy scoreless during the final 4:27 of the game, things really got interesting.

In the end, though, Gilroy's 19-3 advantage in the second quarter proved to be just too much for Homestead to overcome. Gilroy won 40-38, ending the season for the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League's El Camino Division co-champion.

Homestead led 12-7 after the first quarter, but Gilroy's 15-point surge put the southern Mustangs ahead 22-12. Senior Desiree Prevo's free throw with 1:32 left in the half ended Homestead's dry spell, but the northern Mustangs trailed 26-15 at half.

Gilroy scored the first six points of the second half, stretching its lead to 17 points. Homestead then went on an 11-point run and pulled to within 32-26, but never could pull even.

Senior Kate Mower scored seven of her team high 10 points during the third quarter. Prevo finished with nine points and Emily Blazensky scored eight for Homestead. Elan Kim and Nicole Chan added four apiece and freshman Shelby Morita tossed in two.

Other team members were Melissa Cheng, Genevieve Fernandez, Cheryl Ichikawa, Roxana Tehrani, Lauren Tomasada and Kylie Loutit.

Homestead finished with a 14-11 overall record.

Fremont boys fall

Senior guard Jeremy Allen broke loose for a game-high 22 points in a CCS Division II boys game at St. Francis, but it was not enough to extend Fremont's season another game.

The Lancers, led by Robert Bow's 19 points and Omar Bourgoub's 12, overcame the Firebirds 55-48. Fremont, which finished the season with a 16-13 record, got 10 points from senior Sam Kesten and six from Michael Bursky. Leo Janisse and Jordan Sever tallied three apiece, and Benny Evien and Aaron Moore each scored two.

Other Fremont players were Jake Villaubi, William Shen, Danny Moctezuma, Rafael Vasquez, Modycar Ramirez, Marquis Hamilton, Shelton Swopes and Jacob Ryan.
