Sunnyvale girls win 7th grade basketball title
By Mike Barnhart
Paced by a rugged defense, Sunnyvale Middle School's 7th grade girls basketball team captured the Valley Junior High School Athletic League championship.
After earning a share of first place with a 7-1 record during the regular season, the Spartans easily beat all three of their challengers in the playoffs.
Sunnyvale's high-powered defense proved to be too much for Blach, 40-24, and Cupertino, 50-28, in the first two rounds. In the championship game against Kennedy on Feb. 5, the Spartans allowed just one field goal and five points in the second half, en route to a 35-17 victory.
Throughout the season Sunnyvale's top scorers were Emily Dinger and Nicole Loughran. Caitlyn Wong directed the team from her point guard position, Drew Edelman provided strong rebounding and Doreen Chan gave the Spartans good outside shooting,
Other members of coach Shane Reynolds' Spartans were Liza Carrig, Jane Hansen, Laura Medina, Yanitsa Mihaylova, Megan Morita, Nikki Shariyari and Kathy Yi. The team manager was Wangui Hymes.
