Sunnyvale health clinics head to Mountain View

By Stephen Baxter

Camino Medical Group has found a cure for some of its aging buildings in Sunnyvale, and many of its doctors will begin moving April 23 to offices in a new $165 million facility in Mountain View.

Camino is also in talks with Sunnyvale planners to demolish and rebuild its main clinic at 301 Old San Francisco Road, which has served residents for more than 50 years.

On May 14, the urgent care clinic at 201 Old San Francisco Road will move to the second floor of 701 E. El Camino Real in Mountain View, about 31/2 miles away, just east of Highway 85. Both emergency rooms are expected to be open May 11-14, said Cynthia Greaves, a spokeswoman for Camino Medical Group.

Physicians from 13 departments also will stay in Sunnyvale in pediatrics, family and internal medicine, and ophthalmology, among others. Greaves said Sunnyvale residents will benefit from the move because they will be able to visit primary care doctors and specialists in the same building.

"The ease of seeing better doctors will more than compensate for the new location," Greaves said.

The three-story, 250,000-square-foot building in Mountain View is larger than the Sunnyvale complex and is expected to have about 130 doctors, and computers in each exam room, said Kathy Rowan, chief operating officer of Camino Medical Group.

Physicians in Sunnyvale will stagger their moves to Mountain View on Mondays from April 23 to May 14. The first units leaving will be infusion services, hematology, oncology, orthopedics, physiatry and podiatry. A hotline and the medical group's website contain details on when each department will move, and they will complete the move June 1.

It is unclear when the main Sunnyvale clinic will be demolished, but Camino leaders have drafted plans for a 150,000-square-foot medical center that would begin construction in 2008, pending city approval. Camino Medical Group expects to conduct community meetings about its plans, as it did with neighbors in Mountain View.

"We'll be really good about what our plans are ... we really do respect the fact that this is where they live," Greaves said.
