Town Center Update
By Stephen Baxter
In a new series, The Sun will update readers on the $400 million Town Center redevelopment project headed by Sand Hill Property Co. The center, bounded by S. Mathilda, W. Washington, S. Sunnyvale and W. Iowa avenues, is expected to include 1 million square feet of shops, restaurants and office space, as well as hundreds of condos. Planners hope to finish it by early 2009.
Sand Hill Property Co. representatives received approval from Macy's May 11 to begin demolition of structures surrounding the store. The demolition is expected to last for a few months. Later, crews will begin digging at planned underground parking garages near Washington and Mathilda, and at Iowa and Mathilda.
Sand Hill also owns the Town and Country mall across from the Town Center, and it told its tenants it could not guarantee them occupancy after June. Banjara Indian Cuisine plans to close the first week of June, a Banjara spokesman said, but many other shops and restaurants will stay. Sand Hill owner Peter Pau estimated more than 70 percent of tenants there have month-to-month agreements. The area is slated to become townhomes and condos.
Pau said Sand Hill plans to open offices at the Town Center and Town and Country sites to keep people informed. It also plans to develop a website.
