Peters is El Camino's top diver, and he nails second in section

By MIKE BARNHART

It turns out the best divers in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League were among the best in the entire Central Coast Section this spring.

Brian Peters of Fremont, the El Camino boys champion, nearly won the CCS title, but had to settle for the silver medal. Meanwhile, the top two El Camino girls, juniors Molly Hayes of Los Gatos and sophomore Christina La of Homestead, also posted top-five finishes at the Central Coast Section Swimming and Diving Championships on May 18-19 at Stanford University's Avery Aquatic Center.

Peters finished second to Bellarmine junior Robbie Taylor, who beat out 16 other athletes with 473.30 points for 13 dives. Just a freshman in his first CCS finals, Peters tallied 441.25 points, a score in the All-American consideration range.

In the girls competition, Palo Alto junior Michaela Fossetta set a CCS record to claim the title against 26 other challengers. Hayes placed third with 442.90 points and La took fourth with 435.10, both All-American consideration totals.

La and freshman Jess Bergman paced the Homestead girls to a 13th-place finish with 79 points. Bergman finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.34.

In boys competition, Bellarmine ran away with the title, amassing 401 points. Out of 42 scoring teams, Homestead placed 11th with 70 points and The King's Academy was 15th with 49.

Junior James Thivierge of King's captured both third in the 50 free and 100 butterfly events. In the 50 free, he clocked 21.48, just .29 behind winner Shayne Fleming of Valley Christian. Junior Geovid Kali of Homestead placed sixth in 21.71.

Kali also anchored Homestead's 200 free relay team to sixth place. Sophomore Paul Kim, who placed sixth in the 100 backstroke (53.52), started the relay fast for the Mustangs. He was followed by junior Jeffrey Meadows, sophomore Matt Edwards and Kali.
