Homestead teacher Hunt charged in teen sex case

By Cody Kraatz

The San Jose Police Department arrested Homestead High School teacher Robb Hunt, 30, on May 23 after investigating a report that he had been having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old Lynbrook High School student over the past few months.

The Santa Clara County district attorney has charged Hunt with four felony counts of sexual acts with a minor and one misdemeanor count of child annoyance. Hunt is scheduled to enter a plea at a June 6 hearing.

Police responded to a call from the Lynbrook campus at 10:21 a.m. Authorities declined to reveal who made the report or where Hunt was arrested the next week, but said he was not arrested on school grounds.

The SJPD Child Exploitation Detail is continuing its investigation and has been interviewing the victim and Hunt, who is in custody at the Santa Clara County Main Jail. Police also interviewed Mike White, Lynbrook's principal, who declined to comment.

Hunt was a student teacher at Lynbrook, located in West San Jose, during the 2005-06 school year and was teaching American literature at Homestead, on the border of Cupertino and Sunnyvale, until the investigation began on May 17. At that time he was placed on mandatory administrative leave and barred from returning to Fremont Union School District campuses.

The district sent an e-mail to parents late on May 24, explaining that a teacher had been arrested but revealing little else, citing the confidentiality of personnel information and police investigations.

"He was, like, a fun teacher. Everyone liked him," said Rohit Ramchandani, a Homestead junior who was never had Hunt as a teacher, but said other students have described him this way. Some students believe Hunt is innocent, others are in shock and "scared" and many more have a lot of questions, he said.

The SJPD said there may be additional victims in other incidents and encourage anyone with information to come forward. But they said there is no reason at this point to believe that there are other victims beyond the fact that Hunt taught at two high schools with many students.

The SJPD urges anyone with information on this case to call Detective Patricia Bowers of its Child Exploitation Detail at 408.277.4102 or Crime Stoppers at 408.947.7867.
