Town Center Update
By Stephen Baxter
In a new series, The Sun will update readers on the $400 million Town Center redevelopment project headed by Sand Hill Property Co. The center, bounded by S. Mathilda, W. Washington, S. Sunnyvale and W. Iowa avenues, is expected to include 1 million square feet of shops, restaurants and office space, as well as hundreds of condos. Planners hope to finish it by early 2009.
* Curious what's happening behind the wooden fence? Four viewing ports have been cut in the fence at the project's north and south ends. Two ports are on W. Washington Avenue near Macy's, and two are near Target's west entrance.
* Crews continue to demolish the old mall building, and excavation has begun with a second company on an underground parking garage. More trucks have been needed to haul debris and dirt, and they have entered on Washington and exited on W. McKinley Avenue and W. Iowa Avenue. Workers with warning flags a guide traffic on Iowa.
* Preliminary excavation work is expected for four more weeks.
* City officials and developers have rescheduled an informational display of the Town Center project to June 28. It will be 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Plaza Del Sol, 200 W. Evelyn Ave.
