Night work on Town Center to close portion of street

By Stephen Baxter

Work on underground utility lines near the Sunnyvale Town Center construction site will close part of W. Washington Avenue on most weeknights from June 25 to about July 9.

Crews are working at night to avoid disturbing most downtown businesses, according to city officials.

Crews will reconfigure utility lines on Washington from Town Center Lane to S. Francis Street from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Work will take place on Wednesdays from midnight to 7 a.m. Regular weekday construction hours will continue from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Town Center.

Driving detours are expected to be posted, and the construction equipment is said to be "significantly quieter" than older equipment, city officials said.

Residents with concerns and complaints can call 408.978.2198.

Town Center Update

The Sun periodically provides updates on the $400 million Town Center redevelopment project headed by Sand Hill Property Co.

*Demolition on the main mall structure is continuing; the walls of the J.C. Penney building have been brought down.

*Excavation of underground parking garages for Block 1 is complete and continues for Block 2.

*Notices are being sent to downtown businesses informing them of upcoming utility work. This first phase of utility construction is expected to last two weeks, and will be performed overnight to minimize disruption to downtown businesses.

*A new vacuum sweeper is being used to more effectively control dust and dirt. In addition, Devcon has changed the route its trucks take so they travel farther before leaving the construction site and then drive over a metal washboard, both of which help shake off dust before they turn onto Mathilda Avenue.

*The city and the developer are working with truck drivers to help reduce the traffic impact the trucks create as they make hundreds of trips a day out of the construction site.

*A meeting was held to discuss the care of the site's six redwood trees, which are showing new growth. Once all dust-generating activities are done, the trees will be washed to remove built-up dust.
