Evans fourth for Homestead

Central Coast Section, meet Rebecca Habtamu.A talented runner who transferred to Prospect from Roseville High near Sacramento since last cross country season, Habtamu introduced herself to Cupertino senior Sumika Shiokawa and 53 other varsity girls from eight schools at the Lynbrook Center Meet held Sept. 6 on the Vikings' campus.
Habtamu, the junior runner of the year in the Sac-Joaquin Section last fall, beat out Shiokawa for first place at the Lynbrook meet. The new Prospect ace covered the 2.1-mile course in 12:23.2, more than 27 seconds better than Shiokawa's time of 12:50.9.
Habtamu, who placed third in the Sac-Joaquin Section's Division II race and seventh in the CIF State meet as a junior, was joined in the top 20 by another new Panther, freshman Dominique Guinnane, who ran 14:16 for 17th place.
Prospect claimed fifth place and Cupertino sixth, out of nine girls teams, well behind team champion Mountain View (38), which placed five runners among the first 13. Junior Kristine Talbott (13:01), who placed third, was the best Mountain View finisher, three seconds faster than fourth-place Emily Evans of fourth-place Homestead.
Homestead junior Lauro Pochowski (13:49) claimed 11th, three places ahead of sophomore teammate Carli Haasbroek (14:01).
In the boys race, Homestead was paced by junior Nick Oliver (11:22), who took fifth. Senior Alexander Colbeth (11:38) ran 12th for the Mustangs and sophomore teammate Mikkie Louthan (11:48) was 14th.
