King's battles from behind for win
By Mike Barnhart
An enormous rushing attack propelled The King's Academy's come-from-behind victory over Bay Football League rival St. Elizabeth 21-20 last Saturday at Oakland's Curt Flood Park.
Senior Jacob Bliss and junior Ben Sussman both ran for more than 150 yards, and junior teammates Rizal Marquez and Nathan Linn scored on one-yard touchdown runs, as the Knights rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second half.
Sussman put the Knights ahead 6-0 in the first quarter with a seven-yard run, then added a two-point PAT after Marquez's third-quarter score to pull within 20-14. Senior Tyler Aagard, also a member of the Knights' first-place soccer team, kicked the tie-breaking extra point after Linn's short scoring run in the fourth quarter.
Bliss accounted for 190 of TKA's 384 rushing yards and Sussman had 157. Junior Travis Johnson was in on 24 tackles, including four quarterback sacks. Linn (17 tackles) and Matt Bosch (14) also turned in huge efforts for the Knights' defense.
After a bye week, TKA (2-1, 5-2) will return to action, Nov. 3, 7 p.m., against visiting Berean Christian of Walnut Creek. The Knights will close regular-season play at Sacred Heart Prep a week later.
Fremont girls win
There haven't been many bright spots for Fremont's girls water polo team this fall, but the Firebirds fared well at the Monta Vista Invitational Tournament, Oct. 19-20.
With several key players graduated from the 2006 team that won the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division, Fremont has struggled in the rugged De Anza Division. With just eight players, depth also has been an issue, but coach Julie Arroyo's squad scored a 9-8, overtime win against host Monta Vista on Friday and reached the Group A championship game the next day. Woodside beat the Firebirds 7-5 in the finale.
Senior Julia Sterling tallied six goals in Fremont's win over Monta Vista. Sophomore Jillian Weir tallied two and senior Abby McNeil one in the win.
In the final against Woodside, Fremont could not rally from a 5-4 halftime deficit. Sterling and Weir scored two goals apiece and sophomore Kristin Dutra added one.
The regular season schedule ends for girls and boys in both divisions this week. Both Homestead teams, playing in the El Camino Division, finished last week in first place with 10-1 records.
