Future of hangar
at Moffett Field
will be studied
The U.S. Navy Base Realignment and Closure group in charge of closing and cleaning up Moffett Field will evaluate the structural integrity of the steel in historic Hangar 1, which was built in 1932 to house a dirigible.
The siding of the hangar contains polychlorinated biphenyl, or PCB, asbestos and lead, which has contaminated nearby wetlands. The results will help program managers decide what to do with the hangar, which is 198 feet high and can cover 10 football fields.
Possible alternatives include covering it in a protective coating or removing the siding, but the Navy recommended demolition and off-site disposal.
The results will be released in an engineering evaluation and cost analysis. The date of the report's release will be determined at a Jan. 10 meeting. For more information contact Darren Newton at 619.532.0963 or darren.newton@navy.mil, or visit www.bracpmo.navy.mil.
Library expands
online photos,
podcasts, videos
The Sunnyvale Public Library has expanded its offerings of photos, podcasts and videos through its website, www.sunnyvalelibrary.org.
More than 3.5 million Associated Press photos are available to library card holders through the library's subscription to the AP Images database. They can be used for educational purposes, but not for monetary gain or promotion.
The library has produced 44 audio or video podcasts since March 2006, including a video about Mexican artist Diego Rivera and podcasts of last month's Small Business workshop series. They can be viewed or listened to online, downloaded to a variety of devices and added via an RSS aggregator like iTunes.
The library has 21 short video clips available on YouTube (just search for Sunnyvale Public Library) that include interviews with seniors, a mayoral forum on the political evolution of Sunnyvale and residents talking about living in Sunnyvale in the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.
