Council revisits
public campaign
financing
Councilmen Chris Moylan, Otto Lee and Ron Swegles will take another look at campaign finance reform as members of a new Public Campaign Financing subcommittee that could produce ideas for a November ballot measure.
The council dropped the idea of a November 2007 ballot measure last July.
A subcommittee formed by Moylan, Councilman John Howe and Mayor Tony Spitaleri produced a measure that public campaign financing advocates said was heavy on the costs--estimated at $400,000 to $1 million for four seats with two candidates each--and light on the benefits.
Moylan supported the measure, while Spitaleri and Howe opposed it.
Funding cuts
force NOVA
to close Fridays
NOVA, a local workforce development agency, has announced it will shut down every Friday through the end of June due to budget constraints.
NOVA is funded through federal, state and foundation grants, with the primary resources coming from the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). The city of Sunnyvale administers the program on behalf of seven northern Santa Clara County cities: Cupertino, Los Altos, Milpitas, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Santa Clara and Sunnyvale.
NOVA was forced to take action after Congress cut $300 million from WIA funding for this year and last year. NOVA has planned for almost 100 percent of its funds to be spent this fiscal year.

Sunnyvale to
honor child
care providers
The city of Sunnyvale's Youth, Family and Child Care Resources Division has announced a new recognition program that replaces the annual Awards for Excellence in Early Education.
In celebration of Month of the Child in April, a certificate of recognition will be given to all childcare providers and centers in Sunnyvale for their dedication to educating young children.
