Art Institute
creates new
local campus
The Art Institute of California--Sunnyvale is open for enrollment, and classes in culinary management, fashion, interior design, media arts and design will start on March 31.
It joins seven existing institutes in California, including campuses in San Francisco, Sacramento and Los Angeles, and more than 40 across North America.
"Our aim is to develop the school as a leading provider of higher education in the creative arts, providing academic programs to meet the growing needs of employers in the South Bay and greater Bay Area," said Daniel J. Cardenas, president of the Sunnyvale school, in a statement.
Degree programs will include digital filmmaking and video production, graphic design and web design and interactive media. The 53,000-square-foot school is located at 1120 Kifer Road near Lawrence Expressway.

Fresh & Easy
would fill
grocery gap
When British grocery store Tesco announced that its Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Stores would open 18 Bay Area locations in 2009, it clearly picked its Sunnyvale location based on need.
A proposal is in the works to build 290 residential condominiums, six commercial condominiums and a 15,000-square-foot grocery store--likely to be the Fresh & Easy at 615 Tasman Drive at the corner of N. Fair Oaks Avenue. The 6.45-acre site currently has two office buildings.
City planners have long noted a deficiency in grocery stores in north Sunnyvale. There is a specialty market nearby, but the nearest supermarket is a Lucky at 484 N. Mathilda Ave.
Fresh & Easy aims to provide healthy food, organic choices, pre-prepared meals and fresh California produce at affordable prices, the company said. Visit www.freshandeasy.com for more information.

Grainger moved
to be closer
to customers
Grainger, a company with clients including Lockheed Martin and the city of Sunnyvale, moved from Mountain View to a new 25,000-square-foot store in Sunnyvale in November 2007.
The company sells tools, janitorial supplies and lighting systems.
"The move to this location was really something that came from listening to our customers and knowing where our customers are coming from," said Rick Haley, Grainger district branch services manager, in November.
The location at 1190 Kern Ave., near Lawrence Expressway and just off Highway 101, is convenient for many.
And the size--an increase from 11,000 square feet in Mountain View--means products are more likely to be in stock, said Howard Krawetz, who runs the radio repeater company K-Comm from his Sunnyvale home.
Others had mixed feelings because the old store was close to their businesses.
"We try to stay in Sunnyvale, shop Sunnyvale instead of buying from suppliers outside of Sunnyvale," said Jimmy Ruiz, a streetlight technician who was shopping for streetlight bulbs.
