Planet-finding astronomer to speak at Foothill College

Renowned astronomer Geoff Marcy--credited with discovering more planets than anyone else in history--will present "New Worlds & Yellowstone: How Common are Habitable Planets?" as part of the ninth annual Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series.

Admission is free. The talk is scheduled at 8:30 p.m. March 5 from 7 in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.

The non-technical multimedia lecture will point out that despite the discovery of more than 250 planets orbiting other stars, Earth-like planets and extraterrestrial life have proved elusive. It will explain what new planet-hunting telescopes are likely to find.

Marcy is an award-winning professor of astronomy and director of the Center for Integrative Planetary Science at the University of California, Berkeley.
